Italian Neo-Renaissance Walnut Fireplace Mantel, Attributed to Valentino Besarel

About the Item

This extraordinary mantel is superbly carved, firstly with a simple dentil cornice; above a front panel, carved in high-relief with birds, scrolling leaves and tendrils. The jambs are carved as a pair of muscular Atlas-like supporters which are a true pair, a left and a right. The naturalistically carved birds, plants and figures have a warmth and humanity in walnut which, if in marble, would be more cool and remote. Most Neo-Renaissance fireplaces available are well-carved but rather formal. This one has a magical quality, look at the photos to see whether you agree. This is an unusual and extraordinary example.
