English 18th Century Pair of Staddlestones

About the Item

A delightful pair of staddlestones, c. 1780, that will add plenty of charm to your garden! Staddlestones, or stone mushrooms, date back to the medieval period and were originally used as supporting bases for granaries, hayricks, etc. The staddle stones lifted the granaries above the ground protecting the stored grain from vermin and water seepage. The upwardly tapering form and overlapping capstone make it almost impossible for a rodent to climb up and into the hay or grain stored above. The air could freely circulate beneath the stored crops and this helped to keep it dry. They differ only slightly in size- the taller measuring 31-¾”H x 23-?”Diameter; the shorter measuring 30-½”H x 22-¾”Diameter. Tops are removable. Sold as a pair only.
