    Cast in Belgium, circa 1960, this cement unicorn features a fabulously weathered white-painted finish. Acceptable losses to the paint have revealed areas of the gray-colored stone, which have developed a black and green patination. The unicorn is depicted in a lodged manner, which is a heraldry term for a domesticated animal lying down with its head raised. A long, flowing mane runs down the nape of the neck, partially covering a bejeweled choker harness. In Europe, unicorns have been part of folklore for over 2,000 years, with people believing they existed up until the late Middle Ages. The contour of the cheek, the thick mane, and the slightly open mouth give the head a sense of realism. Carved with amazing precision, the horse can stand upright (face up) without the aid of a stand. Of course, it can also be hung on a wall in the proper orientation. Decorative horse heads of this size were often seen hanging on the exterior wall of a horse barn.
