19th Century French Provincial Cradle Carved Oak Baby Doll Bed Crib Planter

About the Item

19th century French provincial carved oak baby doll crib planter drinks server. ~Direct from France~ ~Lovingly carved family heirloom from the 1800s, this beautiful baby crib is carved on all sides, and has been modified for potential use as a planter~ ~Both sides feature hand carved panels with large bouquets of stemmed, multi-bloom flowers (dandelions?), and a center medallion that was perhaps a family crest. Both ends also have the carved floral bouquets!~ ~Scalloped upper edge to the trough~ ~Interior supports have been added to hold the heavy metal planter towards the top~ ~Excellent possibilities: without the liner, for pillows, decorative linens and baby décor; with liner inside, great for a planter, or even a ‘drinks’ serving piece at a party~ ~I’m sure the carvings “tell a story” about the family and the newborn for whom this was created. Definitely a unique piece~ ~c1840~ Measurements 23” height. x 45.5” x 24.5”. Interior at top, approx. 21” height. x 43.5” x 17.75”. Zinc/metal liner, 7” height. x 42.5” x 17.5”. NOTE: All of our antiques are direct from Europe. I personally select each item for the quality, design and unique characteristics that you will always find in our distinctive inventory at Geaux Vintage Antiques. …”with all that, why ‘Geaux’ anywhere else?” …

The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to its very ornate carvings. Historically, the local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif in the Brittany Style of antique furniture. Often antique furniture in the Brittany Style was carved out of chestnut or oak, with a very dark finish. A hallmark feature of the Brittany Style of French Country Antique Furniture...
