Large Neoclassical Style Blackened Jardiniere Faun Sater Faces and Swan Torso's

About the Item

This heavy blackened brass jardiniere vase or planter is very impressive in size and in depiction. Look at these three handles in the shape of swan neck and the detailed ornamental mascaron sater or faun faces. This will be an eye catcher for sure in a hallway or as center piece on a table. There is no hole in the bottom, so it is more like a huge vase. A faun is in Roman mythology a creature that is part human and part goat a kin to a Greek satyr. The name faun is derived from Faunus, the name of an ancient Italic deity of forests, fields, and herds, who from the 2nd century BCE was associated with the Greek god Pan. Since ancient times, there have been different legends about swans. Some suggest that the Greek God of the sun, Apollo, turned into a swan. Other mythology indicates the swan was the bird of Apollo or that the swan was the god of music. Some legends are more complicated suggesting erotic ideas like the swan being graceful and beautiful like a naked women. The use of the swan in an ornamental way in the previous centuries was meant as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. However the "importance" of the swan, seems to have been lost since Art-Deco times.
