About the Item

Monumental 16th Century Carrara marble statue, Bacchus is depicted at a young age as in Greek representation, allegory of autumn season, sitting on a boulder, his legs crossed, his face tilted to the right, is lifted to look up; the right arm down at his side carrying a branch with leaves and fruits, the left (missing) originally could appear up and hold a cup, it's attribuited to Montorsoli school and provenience from important villa in Cuneo "Villa Tornaforte"....The 'history' documented the sculpture in question dates back to the forties of the twentieth century when Mrs. Lucia Bernardi Toselli bought it in a house of Genoa and placed it in the park of Villa Tornaforte in Cuneo . It was not possible to collect additional information related to the purchase made by Mrs Toselli in Genoa in the 1940, so it remains a vain attempt to determine the original location of the work. A photo of the sculpture is published in the booklet ' Villa Tornaforte ' with texts by Silvia Caramia, ' guides ', Scholastic Publishing , Cavallerleone, Cn 1997, p. 14. The monumentality of sculpture, most likely meant to be placed in a niche within a garden of a city palace or a villa important , leading to a high-level commission , also supported by the material used and the subject , undoubtedly linked to choices prestigious and elitist . The references to the myth , the gods of antiquity back to a style common among the courts and among the elite Italian Renaissance and Baroque period . Many sculptors and marble workers of the shops that have characterized the taste at that time, particularly in Genoa ( who looked directly at big Roman examples ) developed an artistic fervor linked to the production of marble sculptures very fruitful , supported by the vast wealth of the most important local families. A client who not only possessed of great means , but pointing to the quality, monumentality , pompous exhibition of the welfare state , to the magnificence of the houses in which he lived and objects which surrounded it. With this in mind , having as a reference in the prestigious city doge the presence of the Tuscan sculptor Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli ( Montorsoli , Florence ca 1507 . - Florence 1563) , active in some sites related to the commission of the Doria and Spinola families ( his work left examples in the city from which various sculptors drew inspiration ) , finding plausible information about the Genoese origin of the sculpture in question , it is possible to ascribe the same environment of the Tuscan artist . The sculpture shows in fact a good quality of composition and formulation of the details that the approach works autograph Montorsoli not only Genovese (statues of the apse and Doria tomb in the church of St. Matthew ), but also realized in Messina ( fountain of Orion ) . Some details in the conduct of the drapery , anatomy of the body , face reveal similarities and correspondences with examples autographs , supporting the attribution of Montorsoli environment . Regarding the dating of the work cutting monumental mannered attitude of the body the work place it in the second half of the sixteenth century.
