Large Late 19th Century Japanese Bamboo Basket

About the Item

A masterfully weaved piece - full of possibilities! From the hands of an unknown craftsman in Japan it features some writing at the base of the basket. I had acquired this piece from a small flea market outside Tokyo (as I did with many of the objects you have seen on the site in the past month) and although it was quite large to transport back - The lovely person who sold it to me was trying to explain to me in broken english how she had lived many years with this basket and was very touched that it would go live another chapter of its life somewhere else. Somewhere it would provide a function and an appreciation for where it cam from. Living purposefully with items that reflect one’s ideas of function, beauty, intelligence, and soul doesn’t necessitate a designer name nor makers mark. The acquisition of objects for your home or as gifts for someone else’s carries the same philosophical ideas of investing into memories. Investing in pieces you will have for a very long time because they were in fact designed and engineered for that purpose.
