Nantucket "Double Lollipop" Basket, circa 1900

About the Item

Antique and extremely rare Nantucket "double lollipop" basket, circa 1900, a shallow oval swing handled basket with carved wooden staves, handle and bottom plate, and cane weave. The basket has normal cane weave on wooden staves which end in the rare and desirable rounded "lollipop" end extending above the rim, but in this case also has a second "lollipop" cut-out to each stave below the rim. This is one of only three that I have seen; all three were clearly made by the same hand. The basket remains in very good, strong condition. There is one small break to the cane weave, and a stave has cracked at the top "lollipop" on each side where the handle is attached by copper rivet right through that stave. The same damage was noted on the other two examples found in the past. This is an early and exquisite Nantucket basket, and is as rare as they get. The "single lollipop" baskets routinely sell in the $30,000 and up range, with one setting the record at $110,000. Measures: 3-1/4 in H x 9 in L x 7-3/8 in W.
