18th C Worcester Porcelain Trio of Coffee Cup Tea Bowl and Saucer, circa 1780

About the Item

This is a good late 18th century Worcester porcelain TRIO of Coffee Cup, Tea Bowl and Saucer in a combined blue and gold pattern, fully marked and dating to circa 1780. All pieces are decorated in a classical pattern of underglaze blue with hand gilded overglaze gold. By the 1770s Worcester was producing patterns just in gold or blue & gold, to suit the new classical taste of the period, probably led by Sevres of France, with the Worcester factory favouring a rim of fine dentil gilding, as with these pieces. They all have an upper blue border beneath a gold rim with a row of dentil gilding over the blue, with extended Prince of Wales feather motifs in gold below. The saucer and tea bowl inner have a blue ring with a hand painted gold continuous intertwining leaf design. The bases of the saucer and coffee cup have a blue painted Worcester Crescent mark. The Tea bowl is unmarked but from the same set. For further details and examples see The Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain Vol. 1, 1751-1851, written by Henry Sandon for the Antique Collectors Club. Overall a classical Worcester Trio of pieces from the late 18th century.
