Bowl, Talavera, Spain, Late 17th-Early 18th Century
About the Item
Ceramic bowl decorated with high-temperature enamels on a white opaque tin slip. The polychrome is based on colors typical of Talavera: cobalt blue, copper green, manganese black, antimony yellow and ocher, browns and iron oranges. These glazes were applied on the raw slug, so the piece was cooked only twice: one for the paste and another for the engobe and the glazes. In addition, the colors were protected with a varnish, which was also cooked in this second bake. The pieces were placed in the oven in blankets or boxes, so that the colors did not burn (they are cooked at a very high temperature, 900º). In general, those of Talavera will be good burials, without major defects. The rise of this ceramic manufacture will take place between the 16th century and the mid-18th, when the French taste is introduced in Spain, and the clientele goes to prefer the pieces of Alcora. Nevertheless, Talavera will live a new Golden Age at the end of the 19th century, with historicism. This piece presents a typical decoration of Talavera, which will be very imitated in other centres throughout the Modern Age: an animal in a rampant position in the centre, on a plane of schematic floor, flanked by two large plant elements. The decoration is completed with synthesized vegetal elements and bands of concentric lines, to the interior and to the exterior.

- Frame, Wood, Late 17th-Early 18th CenturyLocated in Madrid, ESFramework. Carved wood, late 17th-early 18th century. Rectangular frame that presents a "base structure" of straight lines, combining moldings of different widths and finishes (inside, a golden band with Fine plant details towards the corners; then a thin red one, and a wider green one, these two the latter imitating marble; outside, another fine gilt molding), enhanced with a series of carvings of vegetal elements in the corners (symmetrical composition), two ovoid elements on the long sides and a highly elaborate cresting with vegetal elements, rockeries, scrolls, flowers and imitation of fabrics (which are joined with those ovoid elements mentioned). The combination of red, green and gold is common in certain types of frames (compare, for example, with the terracotta of Salamanca made around the middle of the 16th century by Juan de Juni, which is kept in the Victoria and Albert Museum). On it, a series of carvings with a lot of movement and depth have been added, showing Baroque influence (reminiscent in certain details of works such as the frame of the Immaculate Conception by Alonso Cano...Category
