Nils Thorsson Danish Royal Copenhagen Faience Glazed Baca Bowl

About the Item

A good quality stylish Danish Royal Copenhagen Aluminia Faience glazed bowl in the Baca design with fish by renowned Scandinavian ceramic artist and designer Nils Johan Thorvald Thorrson (Swedish, 1898-1975) dating from the 1960’s. Swedish born Nils Thorsson joined Royal Copenhagen in 1912 and went on to become their most prolific designer and became their Artistic Director. He was renowned for a unique simplicity and functionalism. His versatility also made him the most prolific designer of painted patterns which exemplified mid-century Danish modernism. This fine ceramic bowl is a perfect example of his mid-century style and is decorated with fish in various size and styles divided into panels and incorporating Thorsson’s diverse artistic styles through use of abstract patterning. The dish is of square form with a raised edge and rounded corners and combines four decorative fish panels to the inner bowl with a decorative border around the inside edge. The bowl is decorated in tones of brown on a white ground with a brown and grey glazed textured outer edge. The bowl is extensive marked to the base and includes an original retailers label. Provenance: acquired in the British art market. In good condition.
