Contemporary Blue Porcelain Charger by Japanese Master Artist

About the Item

This exquisite Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain charger in red and blue is a signed masterpiece by master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan’s southern island of Kyushu (1931-2009). The hand painted charger features deep shades of red and blue on a striking rectangular body. The artist was admired for his depiction of scenes of nature and intricate geometric patterns. His legacy lives on through his two sons, acclaimed porcelain artists in their own right, each of whom specializes in one aspect of their father’s style. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his exceptional work and unique contributions to the centuries old art. This charger was part of a collection of this artist's lifelong works that was carefully preserved in his kiln and was recently released by his two sons who continue to manage his kiln. This stunning porcelain charger depicts a noble lady on a cherry blossom viewing outing. She stands on a meticulously expressed cedar-plank platform and is surrounded by a richly decorated curtain installed to preserve her privacy. The artist adds a humorous touch by placing a cat near her feet, and a more somber note by showing that one of the female retainers carries a sword for her protection. The scene is framed with the artist’s signature hexagon pattern. Each hexagon encapsulates a five-petalled cherry blossom done in soft hues of yellow and green, and is placed upon a striking dark blue background. The exquisite porcelain piece comes in the original wooden case signed by the artist. Dimensions: W 16 in, D 12, H 1.75 in.

  • A Massive Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Plate by Kajiwara Kiln
    Located in Atlanta, GA
On offer is a truly impressive blue and white porcelain plate of Hizen ware, from Arita in Japan, circa mid to late-19th century. The plate was made by Kajiwara Kikujiro (菊次郎, the second Kiku son) and/or Kajiwara Kikusaburo (菊三郎, the third Kiku son who died in 1883) of the Kajiware Family Kiln of in Arita. It was decorated in a superb design with blue under-glaze, clearly out of a hand of a master. In a Classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period, the plate displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged still in a surprisingly harmonious manner. Anchoring the center of the design is an eagle perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree, its talons clenching the bark and its wings about to open. The motion of the its immediate taking off is palpable. The trunk and the branches of the old cherry tree provide a spacial frame for the arrangement of large peonies with foliage, bundles of chrysanthemums, Chinese bell...
