On the underside, above the maker's mark the reference number is listed. The signature reads: 'Pol Chambost Made in France'. About the artist: Pol Chambost (1906-1983) came from a family of artists. His father was a sculptor and his mother was a painter. He trained in Paris at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués and the Paris Ecole des Arts Décoratifs and taught himself pottery. Building on his training as a sculptor, he developed a passion for clay as a living medium that led him to explore colours and forms. He won numerous awards at the Salons des Artistes Français during the 1930s and was soon placed in a class of his own. At the end of WWII, he set up a pottery studio at Ivry, in the Paris outskirts. Chambost took his inspiration from everything, not least the paintings of Georges Braque. He moved to the Dordogne, in Southwest France in 1964. His fondness for Chinese porcelain led him to create vases, bowls, bottle and jars in plain, well-proportioned traditional forms which show off the clay and colour glazes magnificently. His pieces are signed 'Pol Chambost' or 'Poterie Chambost' and bear a reference number, engraved in the clay on the back, in some cases with the words 'made in France'. A few pieces bear the intertwined initials 'PC' on the back (ref: 'La Céramique française des années 50' by Pierre Staudenmeyer). Dimensions: H 4 cm / 1.6" W 19.5 cm / 7.7" D 10 cm / 3.9".
