Chinese Export Silver Cigar Box by Hung Chong & Co.
About the Item
Sterling silver cigar box marked Hung Chong (or Cheong) & Co., silversmiths & retailers, Canton, China, circa 1860-1930. Classic intertwined wreath on top with simple closure and mahogany liner.
Hung Chong was a silversmith and retailer located in both Shanghai and Canton, and sold items from local silversmiths. It is sometimes possible to differentiate the item from Shanghai to those from Canton based on their style. Smooth and plain styles of Shanghai sometimes contrast to decorated pieces that were often attributed to those made in Canton. Because of the simplicity of this piece we think it is probably from Shanghai.
Please note the last image-when we took the box apart to clean it, the advertisement was stamped on the inside top of the wooden liner.
