17th Century Charles I Carved Oak Box with Original Iron Clasp and Staple Lock

About the Item

An attractive early 17th-century carved oak box of boarded construction from the reign of Charles I, circa 1640. England The box is deeply carved and punch decorated to the frieze in a geometric pattern with rose (guilloche) and lunar decoration, each punch decorated; centred by the original Iron staple lock plate. The moulded rectangular top retains the original Iron clasp and opens on the original hinges. The guilloche was a popular Renaissance motif and was very widely used across the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries. The box is in its original condition and has a lovely rich colour and patina. The 17th century was a period of great turbulence in British history and this was reflected in art and design. The period began with the ending of the Tudor dynasty and the rise of the Stuarts. In the middle of the century, the Civil War and the execution of Charles I saw Puritanism take hold. The 17th century is famous for its rich design styles. The Jacobean period saw luxurious and exotic materials brought to Britain for the first time.
