Antique Chinese Wedding Jewelry Box
About the Item
This beautiful small antique Chinese hand painted wooden box is a traditional bridal box. The family of the bride fills the box with jewelry for their daughter to bring to her new home. The literal translation of the 4 characters on the box is "freedom marriage". The top two characters 自由 means FREEDOM, the lower two characters, 紿婚 means MARRIAGE, not sure why "freedom" marriage.
This box may be from a more modest family as the wood itself is not of value. However the calligraphy and the the flower paintings are done by a "good" artist.
Red color of the box symbolizing luck, joy and happiness. Red is also the traditional color worn by Chinese brides, it's believed to ward off evil. The gold trim symbolizes wealth and riches.

The red wax seal on the bottom of the box indicates that it is a legitimate antique and has been approved for export.
