Antique Dutch Silver Tea Caddy

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive, large antique Dutch silver tea caddy; an addition to our silver teaware collection. This exceptional and large Dutch silver tea caddy has a chamfered rectangular shaped form onto four cushion feet. The surface of this silver caddy is embellished with embossed and chased decoration depicting figures drinking, conversing and supporting each other in a tavern setting; this ornamentation was influenced by Flemish/Dutch genre artwork, such as pieces crafted in the late 17th century by David Teniers II. The swept upper portion of the caddy is embellished with floral sprays, accented with curvilinear fluted designs to each corner. The box is fitted with an elevated rectangular sleeve fitted with the original hallmarked push fit cover, accented with cast and applied illustrations depicting gentleman in armour and a portrait of a dignitary. The upper plateau of the cover is surmounted with a cast knopped finial. The underside and cover of this large silver tea caddy include: Maker's mark: R 133 (untraced) Silver quality/purity mark: Lion Passant mark with 2nd standard purity (.833, 833/1000) Duty mark: Minerva head, M (Schoonhoven) Export mark: Key mark intruding lion passant This exceptional example of Dutch silverware is large for its type. Condition This antique large silver tea caddy is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The embossed and chased decoration is all very sharp. The Dutch hallmarks struck to the underside of the tea caddy and surface of the cover are all very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the exceptional gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this piece of antique silverware. A late 19th/early 20th century tea caddy made by the Canton-based artisan workshop LIAN XIANG SHENG 聨样盛 for the Canton and Hong Kong-based luxury goods retailer WANG HING 宏興 This particular style of tea caddy based on a naturalistic interpretation of prunus mume tree trunk takes its inspiration directly from Yixing unglazed stoneware [aka zisha] produced in Jiangsu Province. The Yixing potters began specialising in making teapots during the Ming dynasty as a direct result of the then new innovation of making tea from rolled leaves rather than the finely ground powdered tea that preceded it. In time, among Chinese tea connoisseurs, it was considered that a Yixing teapot...
