English Winsor and Newton Paint Box with Drawer, Paint and Pallettes circa 1865

About the Item

English Winsor and Newton mahogany with ebony stringing paint box with drawer. This paint box retains its original Winsor and Newton Label in the lid as well as in the bottom of the brush holder section. The original paint labels and old paints are still in place. When the paint tray is lifted out there is space under the tray for painting equipment-brushes and paraphenalia. There are two porcelain paint mixing trays; one in the top section and one larger one in the drawer (the larger one has staining). There is also a glass mixing or washing bowl in the upper section and various brushes and a few extra paint squares. The box retains its original working lock and key. The box itself is in excellent condition. Circa 1865.

    English 19th century burl walnut writing box of unusual interior conformation. The exterior of the box is inlaid with a transitional English ship, having both sail and steam capabilities , sailing on the open seas. She is made of ebony, boxwood and sails on a sycamore sea. The front panel is inlaid in perspective cube made of boxwood, satinwood, sycamore and ebony enclosed with delicate stringing. the end panels are of lively walnut and the back panel is in flame mahogany; all are enclosed by delicate stringing.. The interior has a mahogany writing panel which hinges down to write upon; the interior of that space retains its original red paper lining. The space in the bottom of the box has wells for oddments and ink; two of the compartments have bottoms which slide to the center and reveal hidden spaces beneath them.
