Late Victorian English Table Casket with Mother of Pearl Inlay

About the Item

This precious 19th century English table casket features mother of pearl inlay and carved shell drawer pulls. The top of the piece is decorated with a painted landscape and Gothic church, incorporating mother of pearl to create a whimsical scene. The papier mâché inlay technique used throughout this treasure box was a European innovation inspired by a desire to recreate lacquerware imported from China during the early 19th century. A stunning accessory for the home, this wonderfully ornate box is perfect as a decorative jewelry box. The original lock with keys for the top compartment is still operable.
