"Leaping Deer in Snow, " Striking Art Deco Lidded Box by Waylande Gregory
About the Item
Gorgeously glazed in tones of gold and warm, dark gray, this lidded ceramic box depicts a leaping deer on its cover, the spots on its fur echoed by the large snowflakes in the air. The artist, Waylande Gregory, was a renowned WPA sculptor and innovative ceramicist who produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums.

It is an early work of Waylande Gregory for Cowan Pottery, before he struck out on his own in the 1930s, and it is finished with a striking, speckled glaze in a rich, burnt sienna color, with a touch of green in the depths of the dish. Gregory was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II.
