Regency Rosewood Writing Box

About the Item

A fine quality, charming 19th century Regency Italian late baroque period walnut 2-drawer table, late 17th/early 18th century period rosewood writing box having elegant brass inlaid decoration and original brass handle to top, opening to reveal Baized writing slope, inkwells, lidded compartment and pen tray, over further large storage compartment.  Dating to the regency period this beautiful writing slope is constructed from a very high quality cut of rosewood veneers which have a striking grain and retain an excellent colour and patina. This is further enhanced by the intricate, fine, brass inlaid decoration on display and it would have taken a craftsman with considerable skills to put all this together. As is common, when opened the box reveals a baized writing slope and various other compartments. It is fascinating to imagine some of the correspondence that may well have been written using this very piece over the 200 years or so of its life.  Overall the condition is excellent and the writing box has simply been cleaned and naturally waxed using traditional methods by our specialist restorers in our workshops before being offered for sale. The lock works and the item comes with working key.  Circa 1825.  Measures: Height 4in.  Width 14in.  Depth 9.5in.
