Antique Late 19th Century Silver Repoussé Decorated Jewellery Box with Cherubs
About the Item
Antique Late 19th century silver repoussé decorated jewellery box with Cherubs, Forest God in the centre surrounded by the birds and floral motifs .
Interior is decorated with green velvet.
Lid top is decorated with two Cherubs ( Putti ) holding ribbon above the town.
Putti (plural) are angelic child-like figures specifically depicted in visual art and paintings. They sometimes denote religious significance but are more often interpreted as amorini: little love-spreading creatures, a lot like Eros. As a general rule, whilst Biblical cherubs are purely spiritual, Cupids and putti, on the whole, are more associated with erotic, earthly love, and are known to have a mischievous streak.
