Silver plated and faux tortoiseshell tea canister

About the Item

The bombe shape of this small tea canister is made of silver plate and covered with faux tortoiseshell. The domed lid is topped with a ball knop and the piece sits on four silver plated ball feet. There are three gadrooned edges and the panels of faux tortoiseshell are separated by silver stringing. It stands 109 mm (4.25 inches) high, has a width of 89 mm (3.5 inches) and a depth of 76 mm (3 inches). There is some loss of the silver plating to the lid and to the gadrooned edges in particular. It is unmarked and would date to around 1870.
