An Italian Brass Hanukkah Menorah Lamp, Circa 1800

About the Item

An interesting Italian Brass Hanukkah Menorah Lamp made in a unique fashion around the 1800's. Hanukkah lamp is attached to the lower part of the backplate and is shaped as a fully formed menorah with eight oil jars on eight separate foliate branches. Framing the backplate are two palace columns with foliate patterns forming an entranceway with a shell-designed portico with an applied hanging ring at the top. A hand grasping a cruet protrudes from the top left of the inner backplate, to the right, a servant lamp juts out from its side, and a rectangular drip pan is attached at the bottom

This Early 20th-century "Der Tog" Menorah rests on a dome-shaped stepped base adorned with two fierce Lions of Judah separated by laurel branches. Surmounted by a foliate saucer knopped stem that supports the eight basketweave mechanical branches which oscillate, and mounted by eight jug-shaped cups similar to clay jugs that were used in days of antiquity to store oil or wine. Center stem is crowned with a pierced encircled Star of David mounted with the servant lamp in the shape of a two-handled jug at its crest. Marked "Der Tog" in Hebrew on the lower stem.
