Pair of Gilded and Sculpted Bronze Candlesticks, Empire Period

About the Item

Pair of gilded and sculpted bronze candlesticks from the Empire period. The socket is very intricately sculpted with beading and foliage. Beneath the socket, three female busts face outward and adorn the top of the fluted, tapered barrel. A band of latticework separates the busts from the fluting. The foot of the barrel is decorated with three sets of feet and rests on a circular base that is bordered with water leaf. This model of candlestick is inspired by torches featuring feminine motifs from the Louis XVI period. Their creation is attributed to the ornamentalist Jean-De´mosthe`ne Dugourc (1749-1825), who inspired numerous artists from his generation. His talent extended into all of the decorative arts, such as the fabrics of Camille Pernon, the furniture of Georges Jacob, and the bronze production of Thomire. In 1784, he was appointed as the designer for furniture storage of the crown as well as the construction steward for the king’s brother. His repertoire was a mixture of a return to antiquity and to nature, which he published in 1782 in a collection of arabesques. A pair of candlesticks (c. 1781) inspired by Dugourc’s design and intended for Marie Antoinette’s Cabinet of the Meridian in Versailles is conserved at the Wallace Collection in London.
