19th Century Scottish Regulator Longcase Clock, Precision Grandfather Clock

About the Item

Antique precision regulator, grandfather clock with seconds pendulum Scotland Mahogany, brass First half 19th century Dimensions: H x W x D: 202 x 50 x 25 cm Description: Exceedingly decorative and extremely high quality finished seconds pendulum clock from the early 19th century. Solid and veneered mahogany clock case standing on pedestal plates with side viewing windows for the movement and glazed doors for pendulum and dial. The heart of the clock is a seconds pendulum movement with unique, very large yet delicate Graham anchor and very fine waste regulation. Extremely sturdy construction with thick brass plates, held together by eight heavy and decorative knurled nuts. The pendulum suspension mounted in the back of the case is machined in one piece from the solid brass. An incredible quality! The gear train is filigree and cleanly cut, with six legs in each gear. Roller wheel with counter ratchet. The decorative, silvered full brass dial has a typical regulator division with central minute hand and off-center Sub-dials for the seconds and hours. We see Arabic numerals for the minutes and seconds and Roman numerals for the hours. Slim steel hands. Masterful and wonderfully precise signature, where actually, similar to an inverted engraving, only the shades are engraved. Marshall, Wishaw. James Marshall is recorded with his workshop in Wishaw, Scotland from 1815-1853. Pendulum weighing 5 kg and made of very high quality with wooden pendulum rod set in brass sleeves. Polished pendulum lens with knurled nut on the bottom to regulate the rate. Relatively light weight (approx. 1.6 kg) to drive the precisely crafted gear train. The pulley of the weight is also exceptionally large and superbly crafted. Condition: Very nice condition of case and movement. The movement was completely disassembled and cleaned from scratch. The lever pallets have been fine ground and polished. The clock runs absolutely reliable and accurate. The watchmaker Marshall from Wishaw is listed in the following directory: G.H. Baillie - Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Vol. 1 p.211.
