Breguet Month-Going Long Case Regulator Clock

About the Item

Completed on December 31st, 1931, this Breguet mahogany and brass floor month-going regulator clock is a perfect emblem of Breguet’s Art Deco and mechanical excellence during the important interwar period. Adorned with the hallmark Breguet features, including the famous moon tip Breguet hands and a beautifully polished brass frame, the clock is further enhanced with exquisite decoration on the plates. Featuring the most accurate escapement of its time, this month-going regulator stands as one of the most dependable timekeepers of its day. Its design even excludes a chime to maintain absolute precision, reflecting the meticulous attention to detail in its engineering. This clock was included in the renowned “The Art of Breguet” 1991 Habsburg auction in Geneva, where only the most exceptional creations from the world's preeminent clockmaker were showcased. Among these distinguished timepieces, this regulator clock stands as one of the most accurate, complex and beautiful mechanisms ever crafted by the famed firm. Breguet was founded in 1775 by the Swiss-born Abraham-Louis Breguet, who invented many different escapement methods that are in use in timepieces to this day, including the tourbillon escapement, perpetual calendar, re-winding mechanisms and the overcoil. Among the earliest enthusiasts of Breguet's watchmaking were Louis XVI and his Queen, Marie-Antoinette. Famously, Caroline Murat, sister of Napoléon Bonaparte and Queen of Naples, trusted the firm with her commission of the world's first known wristwatch, completed in 1812. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Breguet continued to innovate, contributing significantly to the evolution of clockmaking. Not only was this clock featured in the classic multi-volume study of French clockmaking published by Tardy in 1985 and chosen for the Habsburg 1991 auction, but it also has a notable history of ownership. As stated on its accompanying original proof of purchase, this timepiece was almost certainly sold to Nicholas Pusey, the famous president of Harvard University. Exceeding almost all standards of timekeeping instruments, this is a once-in-a-lifetime horological marvel.
