Gilt Bronze and Parquetry Standing Clock by Kahn in the Régence Style

About the Item

Gilt bronze and parquetry standing clock by Kahn in the Régence style French, early 20th century Measures: Height 262cm, width 62cm, depth 17cm This beautiful longcase clock is of elongated violin body form. The wooden surfaces throughout are superbly veneered with fine parquetry, while neoclassical style gilt bronze mounts proliferate: the surmount of eagle, globe, and serpent; the twin cherubim flanking the surmount, and the twin cherubim espagnolettes on the lower case; and a whole variety of scrolls, acanthus leaves, and classicising assemblages. The clock dial, of white enamel, is inscribed with Roman numeral hour marks and Arabic numeral gift minute marks, the hands of scrolled gilt bronze. The clock, by the celebrated Ed. Kahn and Cie., takes as its model various Régence period originals, particularly pieces by Cressent. Kahn was celebrated in his own day, and since, for its faithful interpretations of earlier precedents. The movement is stamped ‘1691/69’ and the gilt bronze is marked ‘Kahn’.
