Large Antique Hand-Painted English Grandfather Clock Commemorating Lord Nelson

About the Item

This very large and substantial antique grandfather clock was made in 1805 by William Whitaker of England with hand-painted artistry by Alker of Wigen to commemorate the life and death of Admiral Lord Nelson. The extremely well executed hand-painted panels depict various battle scenes featuring on the face, the HMS Victory confronting the French ship and the four corners with small portraits of Nelson and his Admirals. There are several smaller hand-painted panels done in gilt with a black background depicting Nelson's battalion in battle, with a large panel on the front on the door depicting his death. The clock mechanism is in good working order and chimes on the hour, and we have the original key for it. The case is done in a veneer, and the front door is flanked by two hand-carved Corinthian columns with a brass finial and serpentine feet. The false plate of the clock itself is clearly signed "Will Whitaker" and the bottom of the face is signed "Alker Wigen" in script.
