Pendulum clock, Italy, 1970

About the Item

Pendulum clock built in the 1970s. The story of this item is rather peculiar: Some time ago a kind-looking elderly gentleman came into our store and asked if he could look at our merchandise. At one point he told us that he was a watchmaker, employed in the 1970s at the Lowell watch company in Modena, and that he had an interesting object at home to show us. He explained that in those years the company wanted to come up with some innovations in the market for classic pendulum clocks, and that he was precisely the person dedicated to building prototypes, which would then be screened for mass production... This pendulum was not chosen for such production, and the maker took it home. For more than 50 years it has been guarded by its creator. The clock is fully functional, hand-wound, operated by chrome-plated steel chain gears at the ends of which are three counterweights of different weights that mark time by descending. The plexi front compartment is sliding, thus facilitating charging operations. The maximum charge provides a range of 6 days. The clock chimes the hours, half hours and quarter hours, with three different combinations, as the sound is produced by 4 independent brass hammers. The casing of the entire pendulum clock is made of lacquered plywood. Because such an object began as a prototype, it does not bear the trademark of the company that produced it.
