Antique French Empire Ormolu Striking Library Clock

About the Item

A fascinating Antique French Empire Striking Ormolu mantel clock A fascinating clock in the form of a library bookcase, with two children sitting at each side. Raised on a plinth on ormolu feet, the Roman dial is cast ormolu with blued steel Breguet hands. The clock has a twin barrels movement with silk suspensions anchor escapement, striking the hours and half hours on a bell. Clocks featuring libraries were popular during this period. The two children are diligently studying in a library, with beautiful details. Without any regard to time, both are sitting in front of a clock. They wear chitons and their dress, hairstyle and bare feet indicate they are from the Ancient Roman era. The one at the left holds the book and follows the text with a finger. The other one on the right seems to read aloud, which we can see by the gestures of the left hand. This clock doesn’t just tell the time, it also tells a story. This clock is fully overhauled and in the unlikely occurrence that it stops within the first year of purchase, we will take it back for repair at no additional cost.
