About the Item
a very fine Charles X malachite and ormolu mounted mantle clock, depicting a seated Psyche, in patinated bronze, opening the golden box. France, circa 1830
21" H x 16" W x 6.5" D
This clock depicts the fourth task that Psyche was given by Venus in order to prove that she was worthy of her son, Cupid. This fourth task consisted of a golden box which she was forbidden from opening, nevertheless she opened the box that lead to a trap.
