Charles X Period Bronze and Sienna Marble Clock

About the Item

This large and impressive clock was made in France, circa 1830. Composed as an allegorical statement of the classical past the bronze work is of the finest quality. Cast in many separate parts and then attached to give great depth and articulation, the figure is draped in classical robes with a toga and mantel of state. The clock frame also incorporates rare and desirable Siena marble not only saw cut and polished but carved to create broken columns and discarded pediments also liberally applied with bronze mounts and feet as well as architectural details with trophies of war. The clock is a sculptural component to the interiors of the time and would have been incorporated into similar themes seen in a room's decoration. The clock is not currently in working order but the mechanism appears to be complete and to need only a light cleaning and a new minute hand which is missing.
