Marble and Gilt Bronze Clock Base Mounted by a Classical Female Bronze Bust

About the Item

A finely cast gilt bronze clock base mounted with of a classical patinated bronze bust of a maiden after a model by James Pradier. The maiden has her curly haired head turned demurely to one side resting on her bare shoulders, and hands clasped across her partly exposed breasts. The base housing the dial and, movement is made of a griotte marble embellished with finely chased gilt bronze mounts James Pradier (born Jean-Jacques Pradier, 1790-1852) was a Swiss born French sculptor best known for his work in the neoclassical style such as this bronze. Much of the contents of his studio were bought up after his death by the City Museum of Geneva; and since it is unsigned, this bronze which is detached from the base may well have been cast posthumously by the Museum.
