About the Item
A very unusual and quite monumental antique French Louis XVI style Napoleon III ormolu mantel clock by Maison Marquis, the Movement by Languereau, Paris, 1860: surmounted by an urn issuing flower swags, the rectangular body with beveled glazed front and sides, the dial encircled by ribbon-tied flower garlands above a scrolled anthemion frieze centered to front and back by a female mask, above draped labrequins, the reverse of the wreath mount stamped indistinctly with letters DIAL: the white enamel dial inscribed 'Mson Marquis Languereau Paris' Movement: twin barrel movement with Brocot escapement and rack striking on bell, stamped 'Languereau Paris', with original sunburst pendulum, and winding key. The original ormolu base with a centered Medusa head exceptionally hand-chiseled just as the rest of the cast and hand-chiseled ormolu. Clocks of this size and quality are exceptionally rare, and were made either by commission for a noble family or made for Exposition Universelle. Marked MSON MARQUIS - LANGUEREAU & Cie. - À PARIS,

- Antique French Neoclassical Style Ormolu Mantel ClockLocated in London, GBThis ormolu (gilt bronze) mantel clock is a stunning piece of design, which features beautiful neoclassical style low-relief decorations and three-dimensional sculptures. The clock takes the form of a tall rectangular case with a circular white enamel dial near its top. This dial features black Roman Numerals and the maker’s signature, ‘Robin/ à Paris’. The dial is displayed behind a glass lens within a foliate bezel. The case is decorated in its upper corners with rosettes, and in the lower section with a stylised depiction of a swan. The case is topped by a sculpture of a wreath, propped up on a roll of paper or parchment.
