Early 19th Century Madame de Staël Fire-Gilt Bronze Clock
About the Item
A gorgeous fire-gilt bronze clock depicting Madame de Staël seated in a classical landscape holding a lyre, and, at her feet, a fragment of a column. From the French “Restauration" Era of 1815-30. Madame de Stael’s image here appears to have been inspired by a portrait of 1807-9 by Vigée Le Brun representing Madame de Staël as the character of Corinne at Cape Miseno. The fire-gilding produces a sumptuously detailed effect complete with alternating matte and brilliant chasing. In good functioning condition.
