Addison Model 5 Butterscotch and Maroon Catalin Tube Radio, 1940

About the Item

In 1939, Toronto-based Addison Industries Ltd., a Canadian company, was founded focussing on the production of commercial tube radios. The Model 5 “Big Addison” series, featured here, resembling a courthouse or similar monumental building, was made from marbleized butterscotch and maroon Catalin, a form of molding resin that could be formed to produce rich tonal marble-like plastic. 1940 was the year of production for this model with 6 different color variations known to exist. Catalin is not to be confused with Bakelite although both have a similar composition. While both are often used interchangeably, they are in fact very much different in their production processes. No doubt Bakelite is still sought out by many, but it is Catalin that is more rare to find, thus making it more desirable to collectors. The condition overall of this radio is between very good and excellent except for one issue. There is a faint crack to the front casing just above the far left pillar as shown in the photo. The radio turns on but the tuning dial does not work. It would require service by a technician. DIMENSIONS: Width; 12.63 in. (32 cm.) Height: 8.75 in. (22.2 cm.) Depth: 7 in. (17.8 cm.)
