Art Nouveau Repousse Brass & Glass Inkwell

About the Item

Circa 1900, this antique inkwell exemplifies the Art Nouveau period in decorative arts through the shape of its glass bowl and repousse brass-hinged cover, which has a handsome patina and hand-carved scrollwork of vines and leaves. The hemispheric clear glass bowl has no chips or hairline fractures. The bottom has some very minor scratches. The brass hinged lid has a desirable bronze-green patina, consistent with age. It is in excellent condition and works well. Art Nouveau was an ornamental style of art and design that was all the rage in the United States and Europe, during the late 19th and early 2oth centuries. Whether a painting, decorative object, jewelry or furniture, Art Nouveau pieces are characterized by movement expressed via sinuous, organic lines, which often incorporated vines and leaves. The Art Nouveau style could be found most often in architecture, interior design, jewelry and glass design, and also in illustration of books. As its name implies, Art Nouveau was 'new' and very much about free style, compared to the structure and formality in art and design that characterized the 19th century.
