Three 19th Century Black Forest Carved Walnut Inkwells Monkey Kingfisher Bulldog

About the Item

Set of three antique Black Forest hand carved walnut wood hinged ink wells with glass insert eyes. Made during the mid-late 1800s, in the Brienz area of Switzerland. I have seen a lot of Black Forest or Schwarzwald carved dogs and bears, but a kingfisher and a monkey I never saw before. The Bulldog and and the monkey have their original inkwell, a lead and a ceramic one. The inkwell of the kingfisher was replaced, probably somewhere in the 1950s, with a perfect fitting plastic one All three have beautiful carving all-over their surface and over time it has taken on a deep golden brown patine. Measurements depth x height x width in cm and in inches: Bulldog 6cm x 8cm x 5cm or 2.4" x 3.1" x 1.9" Kingfisher 10cm x 9.5cm x 4cm or 3.9" x 3,7" x 1.6" Monkey 8cm x 6cm x 6.5cm or 3.1" x 2.4" x 2.5".
