About the Item
Case is stamped "PITTWAY BROTHERS LONDON MANUFACTURERS & SILVERSMITHS"
All silver is hallmarked London, 1906 with the maker's mark for Norman Marshall.
The eldest son of Queen Victoria, King Edward VII has the distinction of holding the title of Prince of Wales longer than anyone else in history. Prevented from participating officially in government while his mother lived, Edward became a man of leisure, notoriously indulging in a number of pastimes, some rather disreputable. However, he did enjoy traveling, and did so quite often. Upon ascending the throne in 1901, his penchant for travel proved very useful. His extensive European travels gave him a solid foundation as an ambassador in foreign relations. He was related to quite a few of the royal houses of Europe, a relationship that allowed him to be actively involved in foreign policy negotiations. In fact, Edward's involvement had direct bearing on the alliances between Great Britain and both France and Russia. He was also the most fashionable monarch that Great Britain had ever had, and was known to have his outfits sketched by turn-of-the-century paparazzi. Though his reign was short-lived, he was a beloved figure among his subjects for many years.
