Height 22cm 8.66in Width 17.4cm 6.85in Thickness: 0.5cm Weight: 1 Kg Rene Lalique Born in 1860 in Aÿ in Champagne, René Lalique is one of the greatest of his time, whether as a jeweler or master glassmaker. It marks the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods with its unique and recognizable style. René Lalique began an apprenticeship in 1876 with the jeweler Aucoc. After taking courses at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris and spending two years in England, he set up as a room designer and supplied the greatest jewelers such as Jacta, Boucheron, Cartier, Gariod... In 1885, he took over the workshop of the jeweler Jules Destapes and launched himself fully into his career as a jeweler. Women, fauna, flora... The “3Fs” which sum up René Lalique's main sources of inspiration. The artist indeed has a deep admiration for the female body. He also draws a lot of inspiration from nature, which he observed so much as a child, during stays in Champagne with his maternal grandparents. René Lalique's avant-garde jewelry appealed to an intellectual elite. Among the most famous clients are comedian Sarah Bernhardt and oil magna Calouste Gulbenkian. In 1900, René Lalique won an unequaled triumph at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. It was then the peak of his career as a jeweler. But, who says success also says attempt at imitation, which is not to please René Lalique. Glass has been attracting René Lalique for some time now. In 1907, he met the perfumer François Coty. From there, he creates for himself and many perfumers bottles intended for specific fragrances: the container now has a direct symbolic link with the content. In 1913, René Lalique bought the Combs-la-Ville glassworks where he developed the production of his works in series with the aim of limiting costs and allowing as many people as possible to access his creations. In 1921, René Lalique decided to build a new factory in Wingen-sur-Moder. He chose the Northern Vosges because he knew how to find qualified glassmakers there and took advantage of financial incentives from the French government following the First World War. “La Verrerie d’Alsace” specializes more particularly in tableware. Many services are thus developed and marketed throughout the world. ECLECTIC CREATOR René Lalique then distinguished himself in various decorative fields. His contribution to the Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts of 1925, with in particular the fountain Les sources de France, is a demonstration of his know-how in architectural matters. We also remember him, in the 1920s, the radiator caps he made for cars. An exceptional artist and a savvy industrialist, René Lalique knew how to live fully in his time to develop his business. He died on May 1, 1945, leaving behind him an artistic legacy and a name that are still famous today.
