Baga Mandor Shrine a-Tshol

About the Item

When this powerful figure is engaged at Baga ceremonies, it directs the movements of the dancer handling it. Held in one’s hands or worn on the head, the figure becomes one with the performer, merging earthly and spiritual realms. Meaning “medicine,” the a-Tshol is one of the most revered objects dedicated to the protection of the clan. Combining bird and human features, this powerful figure stood alongside shrines and protective medicines invested with supernatural power. Its abstract beauty and expressive presence makes this piece a particularly striking example of Baga art.
