Italian Large Majolica Terracotta Sculpture with Lustre by Adolfo Merlone, 1950s

About the Item

Majolica terracotta sculpture decorated with lustre glazes in shades of red, blue and yellow depicting a knight in seventeenth-century clothing and a lady; prepared to be used also as a base for a lamp. Signature of the author on the base and at the backside. Born in Turin in 1910 Adolfo Merlone, graduated from the conservatory, began his artistic career as a musician at the orchestra of the Teatro Regio in Turin. A self-taught painter, at the end of the Thirties he approached ceramics and in the early Forties he opened a kiln in Rome called "Tanagra" where, assisted by his wife Maria Pagella, he produced artistic ceramics. Interrupted production in the war years, in the early fifties his works take a primitive cut. In the post-war period, while continuing his artistic production, he worked in Castellamonte at an industry of refractory and in the following years he participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions of ceramics in Faenza, Albisola, Gubbio, Vicenza and Florence always getting important awards. In 1958 he participated in the exhibition "Picasso-Le Corbusier-Merlone" in the city of Hagen, Germany. Adolfo Merlone dies in Genoa in 1982.
