Large Scale Modern Sculpture

About the Item

Large scale modern sculpture, purchased from the David Heath Gallery, Atlanta, Georgia, circa 1960s. We have been unable to identify the artist who made this work. It appears to be constructed of fiberglass or resin on a painted plywood base with cement inside the base. It is a large, impressive size, standing nearly 7 feet tall. We purchased it out of an Atlanta estate, and the son told us his parents purchased it from the David Heath Gallery shortly after moving here in 1966. The David Heath Gallery was the premiere Atlanta art gallery from the 1960s-1980s. David Heath began collecting art as a student in Vienna, before making his way to New York in the 1960s. There Heath developed important relationships with leading dealers and gallery owners, including Leo Castelli, Klaus Perls, and Eleanor Saidenberg. He brought these connections to Atlanta, where he opened Heath Gallery in 1965. The gallery became a pioneering showcase for both national and local artists including superstars such as Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Hans Hoffman, Adolph Gottlieb, and Jasper Johns. Again, we are unsure who made this sculpture, but judging from where it was originally purchased, it is likely a major artist.
