Pair of Greenwich Village artist Rebaje Hammered Copper and Brass Cuff Links

About the Item

Nicely crafted pair of cuff links by and signed Rebaje . Hammered copper face with brass button on backside . Francisco Torres arrived in NY from Dominican Republic in 1922. Sleeping on couches and in basements of friends trying to make his fortune . . Gradually transformed himself into Frank Rebajes. He adopted his mother’s last name of Rebajes, which he believed had a more interesting air, and in New York, he soon became known as “Frank” among his inner circle of artists, writers, and intellectuals. At his initial showing Rebajes displayed his wares on an ironing board at an outdoor festival in Washington Square Park. The collection caught the eye of Juliana Force first director of the Whitney Museum of American art, purchased the collection for $30. Rebajes used the money from that sale to open a tiny space in Greenwich village. The work continued to rise in popularity especially after showing at Metropolitan Museum of art, Brooklyn Museum and 1939 Worlds fair. As he prospered outfitting the greater public with jewelry and decorative items at no more than ten dollars each the business grew .
