Richard Hirsch, Scott Meyer & Virginia Scotchie Crucible Assembly Sculpture

About the Item

Contemporary American ceramic artists Richard Hirsch, Scott Meyer and Virginia Scotchie's Crucible Assembly Sculpture was created in 2012. This piece is made of soda fired stoneware with slate base and is part of the "Crucible Project". The following is an excerpt from the book "With Fire: Richard Hirsch, A Life Between Chance and Design" written by Scott Meyer about his collaborative work with Hirsch; "As the line of thinking grew into “The Crucible Project” it is easy to see the form with its attending objects as a logical extension of his vessel series and my focus on industrial objects. Its strong, simple form, symbolic content, and history in alchemical process also offer obvious applications." Signed by all three artists, this sculpture ships directly from the Crucible Show inventory located in Montevello, Al. (Literature: "With Fire: Richard Hirsch, A Life Between Chance and Design", Scott Meyer (Author), RIT Cary Graphic Arts Press 2012 - "Outside In, Collaboration" pgs. 106 - 121 / "Crucible Assembly" pictured on pg. 116 / Image: 7) Richard Hirsch Brief Bio: In the field of contemporary ceramic, Rick Hirsch has earned an international reputation. He has achieved this recognition by engaging in numerous diversified professional activities. Through efforts in university teaching, exhibits, writing, lecturing and researching he has risen to worldwide prominence. In 1975, Hirsch co-authored a book entitled Raku, published by Watson-Guptill. This was the first comprehensive text to address the new innovations developing in the west that were transforming traditional Japanese Raku. Also, in the same year, Hirsch became a founding faculty member of The Program in Artistry at Boston University. Currently, Hirsch is a Professor Emeritus at The School for American Crafts which is a part of Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. His university teaching career now spans well over four decades. Repeatedly, Hirsch has participated in several milestone exhibitions and publications. Significant shows include; The Evolution of American Art in Craft Media Since 1945; Echoes: Historical References in Contemporary Ceramics; American Ceramics Now; Raku: Origins, Impact and Contemporary Expression; and Convergences: The Presence of the Past in Contemporary American Ceramics. Frequently his work appears in book and magazine publications, such as; Overseas Contemporary Ceramic Art Classics by Baiming, China; Raku Investigations into Fire by David Jones, England; The History of American Ceramics from 1607 to the Present by Elaine Levin, New York; World Contemporary Ceramics by Baiming, China; and Firing, Philosophies within Contemporary Ceramic Practice by David Jones, England. Several museums have included his work for their permanent collections. These include; The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; The Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta; The Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; The Taipei County Yinko Ceramics Museum, Taipei, Taiwan; and the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art, Toronto, Canada. In 1984, Hirsch was elected as a permanent member of The International Ceramics Academy, a world-wide organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. A recipient of a William J. Fulbright Research Scholar Award in 2002, Hirsch has also received several Individual Artists Grants. Most recently he was honored by The Rochester Institute of Technology, with the Board of Trustee’s Outstanding Scholarship Award. Recently Hirsch collaborated with Dr. Scott Meyer on his biography, the book is entitled With Fire: Richard Hirsch and is published by The Cary Graphic Arts Press at RIT, ISBN-13: 978-1-933360-97-3. Amid the ever-shifting sands of change and new trends that is prevalent in contemporary ceramics, Richard Hirsch has maintained his steadfast personal aesthetic and continues to make a significant contribution to his field. Scott Meyer Brief Bio: Dr. Scott Meyer, Professor of Art, University of Montevallo: In his 30th year on the UM faculty, exhibits his ceramic nationally and internationally. His fascination with contemporary applications of tradition began at Penn State where he did simultaneous work as a scholar and a studio artist earning a PHD in 1985. This interest, along with his affinity for collaboration, eventually led to the construction of the anagama kiln at UM and the assembly of the team who fire it. His current work involves crucible forms realized alone as well as in combination with other collaborative artists currently known as the Crucible Project. He is also author of the biography, With Fire, Richard Hirsch, A Life Between Chance and Design, published by the Cary Graphic Arts Press at RIT. Virginia Scotchie Brief Bio: Virginia Scotchie is a ceramic artist and area head of ceramics at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. She holds a B.F.A. in ceramics from UNC-Chapel Hill and in 1985 completed her Master of Fine Arts at Alfred University in New York. Virginia exhibits her work extensively throughout the United States and abroad, and has received numerous awards including the Sidney Myer Fund Australian Ceramic Award (SMFACA) from the Shepparton Museum in Victoria, Australia. She has lectured internationally on her work and been an Artist in Residence in Taiwan, Italy, Australia and the Netherlands. Her clay forms reside in many public and private collections and reviews about her work appear in prestigious ceramic publications.

  • Black Geometric Sculpture by Ursula Meyers Conceptual Artist
    By Ursula Meyer
    Located in Stamford, CT
Black geometric sculpture by Ursula Meyers conceptual Artist. Ursula Meyer (1915-2003) American sculpture signed and dated. This monumental geometric form sculpture is one the first work of art ever offered for sale, only at Greenwich Living, by renowned artist Ursula Meyer. Provenance: From the Estate of Ann Pollon Re: The Collection of Ursula Meyer. Descendant. Acquired from the Artist Studio. Ursula Meyer was a German-born American sculptor, art-focused academician, and fine art critic, who proved an influential player in the transmission of and appreciation for European born Modernism to the United States in the post-World War II era. At first a ceramicist beholden to the teachings of 1930s Germany’s Bauhaus and Italy’s Futurists, she eventually became a creator and exponent of a crisp, geometry-focused sculptural lexicon in ceramics, and later wood and metal sculpture. Her legacy includes a decades-long exploration of Minimalism, as well as experimentations in creating and deciphering Conceptual and Expressive genres. Born in Hanover, Germany in 1915 to Ernst Josef Meyer and Elsa Katzenstein, Ursula Meyer is recorded as having “studied with former Bauhaus masters after the Bauhaus itself had closed under threat of National Socialism” in 1933. Spanning the years 1934 through 1937, Ursula’s Bauhaus tutorial is not fully documented, but it may well have included at least brief study with the French-born Marguerite Friedlaender Wildenhain (1896-1985), the first woman to earn the Master Potter certification in Germany, and who worked with Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Kehan and Gerhard Marcks (1889-1981). Meyer is recorded as having directly worked with Marcks, as well as with Otto Lindig...
