Signed Mid Century Marble Sculpture "Kubus" on Ebonized Walnut Base by Max Bill

About the Item

This beautiful Mid Century Modern marble sculpture, entitled "Kubus", was realized by the renowned Swiss sculptor Max Bill in 1966. It features a beveled gray marble body sitting on an ebonized walnut base- which creates a striking juxtaposition and beautifully highlights the materiality of each. The austere yet wonderfully compelling form illustrates the geometrical abstractions of Bill's mathematical thinking, and his preoccupation with reinterpreting contructivism. Its minimalist silhouette recalls the artist's Bauhaus training, and manifests the maxim "less is more." This piece is decorative yet intellectually engaging modernist fine art sculpture great for a grand office or stylish design interior. The work is signed, incised and numbered 12/100. Max Bill was a Swiss artist and designer who founded the Concrete Art movement. He is perhaps best known for his interpretations of Constructivism through structured paintings and spherical sculptures, bringing studied geometry and mathematics into his art practice. “I am of the opinion that it is possible to develop an art largely on the basis of mathematical thinking,” Bill had once written. A preeminent graphic designer and typographer, he was born on December 22, 1908 in Winterthur, Switzerland and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zürich from 1924-1927, then with Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee at the Bauhaus school in Dessau for the next two years. He was later a co-founder of the Ulm School of Arts and Crafts, where he was the head of the architecture and product design departments during the 1950s, and served on the Swiss Parliament from 1967-1971. Bill died on December 9, 1994 in Berlin at the age of 85. Switzerland, 1966 Dimensions: 5.75" H X 5.25" W X 5.25" D.

  • Mid Century Modernist Car Sculpture in Brass on Marble Base by Aharon Bezalel
    By Aharon Bezalel
    Located in New York, NY
This unique and beautifully formed Modernist Car Sculpture in Brass on Marble Base is by the artist Aharon Bezalel, originating from Israel created in 1977. The sculpture is composed of multiple interlocking components, each serving as an individual point of intrigue while supporting one another as a finished sculpture. The body of the abstracted automobile appears skeletal and organic, curving dynamically, each component beautifully proportioned to house figures seated at various points both within interior and exterior spaces along the sculpture. Six figures total, the largest sitting up front with one leg extending, nearly scraping along the marble base as though to slow down this surreal vehicle, the other pulled closer to the body. Two additional figures sit behind, knees pulled close to chest, with three even smaller figures huddled together, concealed from the elements by the top sculptural component. The figures inside are visible from a variety of angles through cleverly planned openings that serve as the vehicle's windows. Signed on the rear of the sculpture, AB 77, edition 12/25 and resting on a rectangular white marble base. This brilliant piece will style beautifully in a wide array of interiors and settings, and is sure to draw the eye of sophisticated collectors appreciating the best of the 20th Century...
