About the Item
A tall, hand built ceramic Modern TOTEM, created by artist Helena Starcevic, this is one in an ongoing study of the totemic form. Here, there are 4 separate parts hand-formed and attached with 4 small feet. The specially formed and angled top is reminiscent of wings on a crown. All the parts are scraped and sanded by hand to achieve a textured surface. Rather than a traditional glaze which can hide the texture, this piece is coated with a white underglaze to give a soft powdery surface and reveal the texture underneath. As always, the artist seeks to abstract the totemic IDEA, here with soft geometric forms.
Fired twice.
Signed with Artist's sigature chop underneath.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
