80s Carlos Mata Bronze Patinated Horse Sculpture, Animal Sculpture "Kyros"

About the Item

Amazing sculpture horse Kyros in patinated bronze, made by the Spanish sculptor Carlos Mata. Series 219/275. In his sculptures of horses and bulls, the influence of Etruscan drawing is especially appreciated. Made in bronze or cast iron, the patina that it gives them stands out, which has become its unmistakable hallmark. In them, the artist works with the basic forms, which were constant in his work. He reduced the figures to silhouettes with pure and stylized lines, and it is precisely this purity that makes the warmth of the bronze texture shine even more, competing in prominence with the very shape of the piece. Therefore, they are usually always very flat figures, created to be seen in profile. Carlos Mata was a Spanish sculptor, born in Palma de Mallorca in 1949 and died in Barcelona in July 2008. He trained at the Barcelona Academy of Art and at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris, cities in which he lived and worked alternately. His work has spread throughout the world and some of them are part of important international collections in public and private entities in Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, England and the United States. He participated in numerous international Contemporary Art fairs and has been selected and awarded in numerous painting and sculpture competitions. He is especially recognized for his representations of animals, in bronze and glass, especially horses and bulls, although some cities, steel structures… can also be found among his productions. However, he also made some paintings, collages and toys, and even founded a jewelry brand. He chose materials such as iron or bronze for the plasticity that he shows when adapting to the original model worked by hand, reflecting the warmth of manual work with its arid and irregular, rough surfaces that invite to the touch. His sculptures in unpolished cast iron take advantage of its austere and rough qualities in figurative stylizations of a certain primitivism and archaeological evocation, generally taking animals, such as bulls or horses, as their subject. The same schematic intention can be seen in his painting, of a neofigurative, planar type and with a contained and reduced color range.
