Alfred Dubucand French Bronze Hunting Dog Sculpture

About the Item

A stunning antique French bronze sculpture of two hunting dogs by renowned French animalier sculptor Alfred Dubucand (French, 1828-1894) and dating from around 1880. Dubucand was born in Paris and was one the prize pupils of Antoine-Louis Bayre. He modelled mainly animal groups producing several dog groups and experimented with chemical patinas on the bronze finish. His work debuted at the 1867 Salon and submitted his final work in 1883. The sculpture portrays two hunting hounds in pursuit mounted and raised on an oval bronze base molded with undulating groundwork. Both dogs have their tails raised with one sniffing the ground while the other looks ahead. The detail is excellent with a natural realism to the movement for which Dubucand was known. The bronze also has a wonderful age patina to the finish. The bronze is signed A Dubucand along with impressed foundry marks E.V. 2593. The base is open showing the bolts which attach the dogs to the base. Provenance: Private Collection, Heydon Grange, Norfolk, England and acquired through the UK Art Market. In good condition with customary wear and aging.

His works were often entered into the annual Salon art exhibition in Paris where he contributed works over the course of his career. He was one of the prize pupils of Antoine-Louis Barye. Dubucand made his debut at the 1867 Salon with a wax model of a dead pheasant, a rather inauspicious start when considering the higher quality sculptures he would submit later in his career. He modelled mainly animal groups, producing a number of deer, dog, and horse sculptures. His better casts feature a warm, mid-brown patination, sometimes coming in even lighter shades bordering on a very light yellow, being nearly the colour of the bronze metal itself. He frequently experimented with chemical patinas, learning the patination process from his teacher and mentor Barye who stretched the boundary with his now famous dark green patinas. Dubucand paid strict attention to the anatomical detail of his subjects, often being so concise that he actually showed the veins in the legs of his deer and elk sculptures...
